Foreword
This competition is the first nationwide student architectural competition organized by the Hellenic Institute of Architecture in collaboration with the Friends of the New Waterfront of Thessaloniki, for the design and construction of an information and communication structure at the New Waterfront, titled “Paralio Sima” (Coastal Sign). The competition is co-organized with the Hellenic Aluminum Association and the Panhellenic Timber Association and is held under the auspices of the Municipality of Thessaloniki.
According to the competition announcement for the Coastal Sign, it is a structure that will function as an information point for activities and events taking place permanently, periodically, or for a specific duration at the New Waterfront. The structure will be installed at two locations along the New Waterfront, which are indicated on the plan, and must be clearly visible from a distance.
The designation of the structure as a “signal” is significant, as it literally serves as the point of reference for the area, the starting point of a tour, while simultaneously indirectly referring to the concept of the “public.”
Due to the high quality of the submissions, the jury selected 14 proposals out of the total of 88 studies submitted to the competition, two of which will be constructed. All submissions will be exhibited at the Benaki Museum (Piraeus street) in the autumn of 2017, along with the accompanying exhibition catalogue.
I would like to thank the members of the Jury for the serious work they performed with a strong sense of responsibility: Mr. Giorgos Parmenidis, architect and Professor at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA); Nikos Margaritis, representative of the Hellenic Aluminum Association; Viky Kaltsidou, representative of the Panhellenic Timber Association; and especially the architects Prodromos Nikiforidis, representative of the Friends of the New Waterfront, and Miltos Tzitzas, Emeritus Professor at NTUA and Vice President of the Board of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, who took on the heavy responsibility of flawlessly organizing the competition along with the Director of the HIA, Dr. Marianna Milioni.
The architectural competition for the Paralio Sima is the third annual nationwide student competition organized by the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, highlighting the growing interest of students in experimenting and seriously engaging with architectural issues toward realization, applying early on the lessons of their architectural studies in Greek Schools of Architecture.
