Childhood and Education
Lysandros Kaftantzoglou was born in Thessaloniki in 1811, the son of a prosperous family of merchants – financiers. His grandfather, loannis Youta Kaftantzoglou, was well-connected at both the Sublime Porte and in the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople, and had the management of the assets belonging to the monasteries of Mt. Athos. His father, Mercourios, died young in 1818, leaving his widow Françoise (Fanny) Tavernier, who was of French descent, with three children to bring up. The eldest of the three boys, Lysimachos, later became French Consul in Baghdad and Civita-Vecchia in Italy; among his colleagues in the diplomatic corps was Stendahl, and as a result much information about Lysimachus and the Kaftantzoglou family is to be found in Yves du Park’s book (1965) about the author.
