INTRODUCTION
The Hellenic Institute of Architecture, among the many other events it organizes, has decided to periodically invite distinguished foreign architects—possibly in collaboration with other institutions—to give a lecture presenting their ideas and work. Each lecture will be accompanied, whenever possible, by a small exhibition. We deemed it appropriate that, on the occasion of each such event, a short publication should also be issued. This booklet will include a brief biographical and bibliographical note on the invited architect, selected texts written by or about them, and images of their work. We also thought that this publication should take the form of a small book, so that it can easily find its place in a library.
We are particularly pleased to inaugurate this series with the present issue, dedicated to the Italo-Swiss architect Alberto Sartoris, on the occasion of his lecture and exhibition of drawings, co-organized with the Technical Chamber of Greece and the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens, which will also host these events. We are happy for two reasons. First, because Sartoris, a vigorous elder today, was one of the pioneers of the Modern Movement in architecture, a member of several avant-garde groups in the interwar period, and a co-founder of CIAM. Second, because with his renowned book The Elements of Functional Architecture (1932), Sartoris gave international exposure to the work of Greek architects, and has always shown a sincere interest in our country. His willingness to accept our invitation—despite the challenges of his age—is further proof of that interest.
