26 years since the 1st Biennale of Young Greek Architects
15.10.2021-14.11.2021
The establishment of the Biennale of Young Greek Architects was one of the first initiatives of the newly founded Hellenic Institute of Architecture in 1995. Since then, from the 1st to this year’s 10th Biennale, more than a thousand architects have participated—often spanning more than a generation apart.
The Hellenic Institute of Architecture presented at the Benaki Museum an exhibition dedicated to the architects who stood out in the 1st Biennale, revisiting the works originally presented through a contemporary lens. Just as the 1st Biennale in 1995 was designed by young architects Nikos Vratsanos and Nadia Koula, along with Apostolos Vettas, the 2021 exhibition had been designed by a new generation of architects, Costandis Kizis and Tsampikos Petras, under the curatorship of the HIA Board of Directors.
Photographs of the architects’ works originally presented in 1995 were exhibited alongside current portraits of the architects themselves, as well as photographs of a recent project of their choice that marks the trajectory of their professional journey.
During the exhibition, a symposium was organized by Panagiotis Tournikiotis and Sofia Tsiraki on the theme “From the 1st to the 10th E.I.A. Biennale.” This honorary reflection on the 1st Biennale, curated by the Board of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, comes a quarter of a century later and was followed by the 10th Biennale exhibition.
