14.12.2011 – 15.01.2012
As part of the monographic exhibitions of Greek architects organized by the Hellenic Institute of Architecture in collaboration with the Benaki Museum, an exhibition was held from December 2011 to January 2012, showcasing the work of architect and professor of Architecture at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, A.M. Kotsiopoulos, and the architectural office “A.M. Kotsiopoulos & Associates.”
Anastasios M. Kotsiopoulos holds a degree in architecture from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1970), a doctoral degree in engineering from the same university (1976), a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh (1980), and was awarded the title of Privatdozent (Habilitation) at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1982. Since 1989, he has been a professor of architecture at the same institution, where he has been teaching architectural design and architectural theory since 1971. A.M. Kotsiopoulos has participated with presentations in Greek and international conferences and has published more than 200 books, scholarly articles, and architectural projects in Greece and abroad.
In 2008, he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens, occupying the Chair of “Architectural Design” in the Section of Letters and Fine Arts. M. Kotsiopoulos has been active as an architect since 1970. From 1984 to 1995, he collaborated with architects D. Nikolaou, Chr. Pantazidis, D. Daki, E. Spartsi, N. Arvanitopoulou, G. Chorozoglou, and V. Karalazos. He also worked on specific projects with architects M. Papanikolaou and R. Sakellaridou, among others. Since 1997, he has maintained the architectural office “A.M. Kotsiopoulos and Associates Architects” (corporate name “K-Architects G.P.”), together with architects Emy Zouboulidou and Alina Panou, based in Thessaloniki with a branch in Athens.
The office’s work includes distinctions in architectural competitions, master plans for universities, as well as designs for both private and public buildings (university buildings, research centers, residences, cultural facilities, healthcare buildings, etc.).
Some of these buildings have been awarded or recognized. Specifically, the H.I.A. Architecture Award 2000 for public buildings was granted to the new unit of the Central Library of AUTH (in collaboration with M. Papanikolaou and R. Sakellaridou). A special mention at the H.I.A. Architecture Awards 2008 was given to the Cultural Center of Naoussa. The Mediterranean Architecture Competition Award for buildings with aluminum facades in 2003 was awarded to the Alumil headquarters, among others. In 2010, in collaboration with two Cypriot firms (a consortium: Chrysanthos H. Chrysanthou & Associates / Eraklis Papachristou Architects / A. Kotsiopoulos and Associates Architects), they won the first prize in the international architectural competition for the new building facilities of the Polytechnic School of the University of Cyprus.
Most of these buildings have been published and exhibited both in Greece and abroad (featured in the 2002 special issue of Architectural Topics, in Greek technical magazines, in the The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture, The Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century World Architecture, Architectural Review, Rasegna, and others).
The exhibition presented approximately 45 architectural studies and projects, as well as a series of drawings by A.M. Kotsiopoulos.
