HIA Architecture Award 2013
18.12.2013-26.01.2014
In the first phase of the session of the project selection committee, the committee members were: Kyriakos Kyriakidis (Vice President of the HIA – Committee Coordinator), Miltiadis Tzitzas, HIA Board member, and the representatives of the winners from the previous 2008 Awards competition, architects Aris Zampikos, Nikos Ktenas, and Prodromos Nikiforidis. The committee held a meeting at the HIA offices on September 30 and October 1, 2013, and selected architectural projects completed during the five-year period 2008–2013, from a total of 91 submissions, distributed as follows:
Residential buildings: 54 submissions
Public and communal-use buildings: 37
On the first day, the five-member committee decided to examine the projects by category, initially having each member review them individually, and subsequently exchanging views where necessary, while formulating and recording specific evaluative comments. On the second day, the committee proceeded with the final selection and the preparation of the relevant lists, achieving notable alignment of opinions and, in several cases, complete agreement. The projects that advanced to the first phase stood out, among many others that are by no means lacking in interest, for their compositional and formal coherence, the originality of their solutions, the clarity of their forms, and the advanced level of execution in both construction and materials. It should be emphasized that the final selections reflect a distinction among other high-quality projects; in other words, they represented a positive vote in favor of these works rather than a negative judgment of the remaining entries. The committee also decided, due to the fact that the submissions in the “residential” category all exhibited high-quality characteristics, to select eight projects instead of the originally planned five. Residential design projects stood out, and to a lesser extent, studies of open public spaces as well as prestigious private buildings. Moreover, the distinction in architectural quality between private projects and those in the public sector or other professional uses has been a consistent characteristic of the HIA Awards competition over time.
During the second phase of the project selection, the committee, now composed of seven members—Elias Constantopoulos (President of HIA – Committee Coordinator), Miltiadis Tzitzas, Aris Zampikos, Nikos Ktenas, Prodromos Nikiforidis, as well as Aurelio Galfetti and Pierre Alain Croset—visited the 13 projects that had been distinguished in the first phase (eight residential projects and five public or communal-use buildings) and decided which projects would receive the Hellenic Institute of Architecture Awards for 2013.
The 2013 Architecture Awards Ceremony took place on Wednesday, December 18, 2013, at the Benaki Museum on Pireos Street. The exhibition of the entries ran until January 26, 2014.
