The richness of the Greek spirit was uniquely and clearly reflected in the buildings of the classical world as well as in those of the historical periods that followed. Our cultural heritage includes works that mark turning points in the history of architectural creation. Simplicity and harmony, clarity of lines, and symmetry are the elements with which Greece contributed to the art of architecture. However, its unsurpassed measure has always been the human being. This unique scale continues to characterize Greek architectural creation, despite the practices and interventions especially those adopted in recent decades in our country.
This exhibition allows us to identify the translations of our architectural tradition into contemporary Greek creation, as it is shaped under the influence of new aesthetic perceptions. It thus gives the viewer the opportunity to realize that this creation does not exhaust itself in sterile reproduction of stylistic features and stereotypes, but rather constitutes the fruit of a continuous dialogue taking place between the old and the new, tradition and new perceptions.
I feel the need to thank the Hellenic Institute of Architecture and the Frankfurt Museum of Architecture for organizing this exhibition, which showcases the contemporary Greek architectural identity in a country that possesses a rich and long tradition in this field.
