Prologue (extract)
The Hellenic Institute of Architecture, following a proposal by Stelios Zerefos, professor at the Hellenic Open University, organized a national student competition titled “Light Up”, in collaboration with the Postgraduate Program in Lighting Design of the School of Applied Arts and Sustainable Design at the Hellenic Open University (HOU). The theme of this third student competition organized by the Institute differs from the previous two, which focused on outdoor urban structures, by shifting the emphasis to the design of a prototype lighting fixture, defined freely by the participants.
A total of 50 proposals were submitted from 12 higher education institutions across Greece, and three prizes were awarded. All entries are presented in this volume and will be exhibited at the National Hellenic Research Foundation, where a special evening event will take place in early July, including discussions between architects and lighting designers. Lighting technology has evolved significantly in recent decades, both in terms of energy efficiency and aesthetics, offering designers the opportunity to create new types of lighting sources with greater flexibility and freedom of choice than ever before, as well as the ability to design evocative atmospheric installations and environments.
The Institute believes that student competitions such as Light Up serve as platforms for experimentation and showcasing the work of young creators, while also promoting the broader strengthening of design in Greece. The creative potential present in academic institutions must be supported not only by encouraging the development of inventive proposals and familiarization with new technologies, but also by fostering connections with the local industrial and artisanal production sectors. There is a pressing need to revitalize the incentives offered to young people for their active involvement in design and production, a sector that has been in a state of prolonged stagnation in recent decades, prompting many to seek career opportunities and recognition abroad.
