Foreword
The nationwide architectural competition for the design of a wooden construction titled URBAN SIGN is part of the series of architectural competitions organized annually by the Hellenic Institute of Architecture for architecture students.
This competition, organized by the Hellenic Institute of Architecture in collaboration with the Panhellenic Timber Association and under the auspices of the Municipality of Athens, received a total of 56 notable entries from young architecture students. The high-quality proposals, both in terms of compositional, design, and technical excellence as well as originality, reflect the very good level of education in the Architecture Schools of our country.
All submitted studies responded well to the competition’s requirements, which concerned the possibilities of adaptation, assembly and disassembly, as well as the economy of construction. The jury also considered that a sufficient number of submissions addressed the main theme of the construction the management of information in the urban space and therefore decided to award, in addition to the three main prizes, four equal commendations.
On behalf of the Institute, I would like to thank all those involved in the competition, our sponsors who supported it in various ways, the members of the jury Eleni Alexandrou, Gianni Albani, Styliani Peristerioti, Milto Tzitza, and Eleftheria Tsakanika for their work, and especially the Vice President of the Board, Prof. Milto Tzitza, and the Director of the HIA, Dr. Marianna Milioni, for the excellent organization and successful completion of the entire process.
The construction of the first prize-winning project represents a recognition of the efforts of the youth, and it should fill us with hope for what they can contribute at this critical juncture.
