Architecture without vision
06-22.10.2022
The Hellenic Institute of Architecture organised an exhibition dedicated to the work of Michalis Orros (1920–1991). The aim of the exhibition was to highlight and critically assess Orros’s body of work, which has remained unpublished to this day. At the same time, seeked to explore whether significant architectural work can be created by an almost blind designer—reinforcing the belief that architecture both originates from and speaks to all of our senses.
Michalis Orros was born in Athens, though his family originated from Lefkara, Cyprus. He studied simultaneously at the Civil Engineering Department of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), specializing in port works, from which he graduated in 1952, and at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Athens, where he never completed his degree due to a vision impairment. This condition followed him throughout his life but did not prevent him from designing and constructing numerous buildings. Despite his significant architectural work, his contributions have neither been recognized nor published until now.
The exhibition opened on Thursday, October 6, at 6:00 p.m.
Exhibition Curators: D. Sotovikis, G. Papadimas
