Athens of the Belle Époque: Guided Tours
19 - 28.06.2023
Organization of Culture, Sports, and Youth of the City of Athens (OPANDA), in collaboration with the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, organized a series of guided tours to buildings and sites from the Belle Époque era, as part of a tribute to Athens during that period.
The Belle Époque was a transitional era of optimism and modernization with a Parisian echo, spanning the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The guided tours, free to attend, will be conducted under the scientific supervision and guidance of architect Panagiotis Tournikiotis. They offer a journey through Belle Époque Athens, as experienced and vividly described by Miltos Lidorikis, playwright and politician, with liveliness and enthusiasm.
Starting from his family home on Panepistimiou Street, Miltos Lidorikis took us through the streets, cafés, and social salons of a city brimming with life, stretching from Aiolou and Omonia to Syntagma. Within these geographical boundaries, we walked in search of traces of a bygone era, in the buildings that remain, and in one or two salons that have preserved the vibrant atmosphere of the Belle Époque.
The guided tours took place on the following dates:
Monday, June 19, at 17:00–19:00
Wednesday, June 21, at 11:00–13:00
Tuesday, June 27, at 17:00–19:00
Wednesday, June 28, at 17:00–19:00
Participation in the tours is free of charge.
Maximum number of participants per tour: 50 people
