Coastal Mark

The HELLENIC INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTURE and THE FRIENDS OF THE NEW WATERFRONT announced a National Student Architectural Competition for the design of an information and communication structure on the NEW WATERFRONT of Thessaloniki, under the title: COASTAL MARK (“Parálio Síma”).
The competition was co-organized with the Hellenic Aluminium Association and the Panhellenic Wood Association, was held under the auspices of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, and was financially supported by Th. W.S.S.C (Thessaloniki Water Supply & Sewerage Company).

DESCRIPTION

The Coastal Mark (“Parálio Síma”) is a structure that would serve as an information point for activities and events taking place on the New Waterfront of Thessaloniki — whether permanent, periodic, or temporary. The structure would be installed in two designated locations on the New Waterfront, as marked on the provided plan, and must have been clearly visible from a distance.
The information provided was offered to the public in two sections. The first section was the permanent Information – covering the development and evolution of the New Waterfront. This content would remain constant and unchanging.The second section was the Temporary Information, relating to events and activities, updated regularly to reflect current programming. The illumination of the information, ensuring that it was always legible, would be an integral part of the structure. The main construction materials would be aluminum and wood, excluding the foundation and anchoring system.

ELIGIBILITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE COMPETITION

Eligible to participate are those enrolled in Higher Architecture Schools who have not graduated by the submission deadline.
Excluded from the competition were any persons involved in the preparation and drafting of the competition brief, members of the jury panel, as well as persons directly professionally connected or closely related (first-degree relatives) to them.
