9th Biennale of Young Greek Architects

The Hellenic Institute of Architecture, as part of its activities for the promotion of contemporary Greek architecture, organised the 9th Biennale of Young Greek Architects, in September 2018, at the Benaki Museum.

The establishment of the Biennale of Young Greek Architects was one of the first activities of the newly established Hellenic Institute of Architecture in 1995. In its course, from the 1st to the 8th Biennale, hundreds of architects have participated, with a difference of more than a generation between them. The 9th Biennale will highlight the face of contemporary Greek architecture in the period of crisis and for this reason will be of particular interest.

A Biennale is a kind of periodic inventory, which aims to anthologize the best current production of young creators. However, a Biennale does not only record the achievements of an era, but also highlights certain works from a wider set as the most important, capturing the “stigma” of the two-year period. In this way, the Biennale is the expression of a contemporary architectural “style”, from a specific perspective.

At this 9th Biennale, the ΗIA decided, as it had done in the past, to upgrade the role of the selection committee, inviting its members to reflect on the material to be submitted and to select, each individually, the works they consider to be the most noteworthy. In this way, those who visit the exhibition will be able to ‘read’ both the judges’ choices and their explanatory texts.

The five-member committee consisted of the President of the HIA, Elia Constantopoulo and the architects Konstantina Kalfa, Theoni Xanthi, Pano Tsakopoulo and Kosta Tsiambao.
