HIA Architecture Award 2017

The Hellenic Institute of Architecture (HIA) announced a competition titled “HIA Architecture Awards 2017 + Student Architectural Photography Awards.”

The HIA Architecture Awards were established for the first time in 2000. The awards are presented every four years and concern completed architectural projects that are exemplary in terms of  their design and execution.

The projects under consideration for the 2017 Architecture Awards were works by Greek architects located in Greece and must had been completed between 2013 and 2017. These projects were classified into categories, which in that competition were residential buildings, public-use buildings, and renovations. One award was to be presented per category.

Projects (a) by Greek architects carried out abroad, (b) by foreign architects carried out in Greece, (c) by architects who have been awarded in previous HIA competitions, and (d) designed by members of the HIA Management Board may participate out of competition and, at the discretion of the jury, if deemed worthy of recognition, were granted a special mention instead of an award.

Alongside the Architecture Awards competition, a Student Architectural Photography Competition was announced, open to students from universities and technical institutes of any field throughout Greece, with the subject being the buildings selected in the first phase of the Architecture Awards competition. The students participating in the photography competition were invited to visit the buildings that were advanced to the second phase of the Architecture Awards competition, to experience them firsthand and to present them through their own perspective using a photographic representation. Each participating student could submit up to three photographs. There was no restriction regarding the subject of the photographs or the building being photographed. It was planned the awarding of three equal photography prizes, regardless of the category of the architectural project or whether it has already been awarded.

The 2017 Architecture Awards Ceremony took place on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, at the Benaki Museum on Pireos Street. The exhibition of the entries ran until November 19, 2017.
