Pharmacy 2030
28.11.2022
The Department of Architecture of the University of Patras (DoA UoP) and the Federation of Cooperatives of Pharmacists of Greece (OSFE), in collaboration with the Pharmacy Program of the University of Nicosia (PP UNIC), are announcing a one-stage Student Architectural Ideas Competition entitled:
“Pharmacy 2030: Student Architecture Ideas Competition for the Space of the Model Greek Community Pharmacy”
VISION
Today, the spatial identity of the Greek pharmacy (and not only the Greek one) does not promote the modern role of the community pharmacist, as outlined in the goal-setting report of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). The Greek pharmacy strongly emphasizes its commercial character, treating the visitor primarily as a customer and consumer of medicines and over-the-counter products.
In contrast, the FIP report states that sales are merely a small part of the services that the pharmacy of 2030 is expected to offer, while a person-centered approach to the visitor’s needs and the provision of primary healthcare services are the main priorities. The FIP goals for the community pharmacy of 2030 outline services—such as health promotion, disease prevention, and management—that require very different spatial interpretations from those prevailing in the Greek (and broader) reality.
Therefore, the philosophy of how the pharmacy functions is set to change. The pharmacy space as we know it today will need to be significantly reconfigured. New spaces and functional units will be added, its flow diagram will change, and the spatial identity of its interior environment will need to be adapted in order to support the new role of the community pharmacist and the provision of primary healthcare services.
PURPOSE
The aim of the competition is to generate innovative architectural proposals and ideas that highlight the goals of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) for the community pharmacy of 2030, with a human-centered focus and an emphasis on the health services provided.
The model Greek pharmacy aspires to become a meaningful urban and neighborhood facility serving the entire community — and especially individuals belonging to vulnerable groups.
Architectural vision has the power to dynamically and sensitively influence the evolution of the spatial identity of the model Greek pharmacy, fostering both functional innovation and social awareness.
