For Souzana Antonakaki
07.07.2020
Souzana Antonakaki, a distinguished architect, passed away on July 5, 2020, after a long battle with her health.
Together with her husband and collaborator of six decades, Dimitris Antonakakis, she founded Atelier 66. Their architecture sparked a broad international discussion on the significance of critical regionalism and became widely known through the publication of the monograph Atelier 66.
Architectural practice and architectural discourse were her means of making meaningful interventions in every crucial issue concerning the quality of the built environment, constituting a unique network of interconnected actions—an admirable body of work notable for both its quality and scope.
While her collaborations with significant architects of her generation represent a substantial legacy, the influence of her thought and work on subsequent generations is equally impressive.
She was one of the founding members of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture in 1995 and has been an Honorary Member since 2015. Her presence at all Institute events remained unwavering until the end.
We will miss her gentleness and grace of character, the strength of her arguments, and her thoughtful approach to a lasting poetic architecture.
The phrase by the philosopher Huberman, “The endless threshold of the gaze…” which she cited as the epigraph in her book, will now accompany us as she crosses the threshold of life.
