Honorary event for KENNETH FRAMPTON
06.03.2024
THEMELIO Publications is organizing a tribute event for Kenneth Frampton on the occasion of the release of the 5th expanded edition of his book Modern Architecture: A Critical History, on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at 6:30 p.m., at the “Georgios Karantzas” Hall of the ESIEA Building (20 Akadimias Street, 1st floor)
The 5th expanded edition of Kenneth Frampton’s landmark work, Modern Architecture: A Critical History, is a significantly enlarged, updated, and revised version, based on the most recent edition of the influential book by the renowned British architectural historian, published in 2020 by Thames & Hudson. Compared to the 2009 Greek edition, this new version includes substantial additions. On one hand, it offers a critical expansion of the history of interwar and postwar modernism in Europe and North America; on the other, it documents the emergence of regional manifestations of modernism in South America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, as reactions or resistance to the advancing globalized architectural neoliberalism. As such, the new edition represents an ambitious attempt to trace the development of the modern movement worldwide—from the late 19th century to the present day—with the aim of producing a less Eurocentric and less “Western” reading of the architectural condition, situated within the local political, economic, social, and ideological contexts of each era. This makes Frampton’s work a crucial addition to the global history and historiography of the modern movement, and a valuable educational resource. The texts are accompanied by a rich and contemporary visual archive, critical commentary by architects Aimilía Athanasiou and Stavros Alifragkis (editors of the 5th edition and translators of the new chapters), and updated bibliographic references by geographic region for further study.
Speakers at the event will include:

The discussion will be moderated by Stavros Alifragkis, PhD, Architect Engineer.
