HΙΑ Architecture Award 2008
15.04 -07.06.2009
The Hellenic Institute of Architecture, in collaboration with the Benaki Museum, presented the 2008 Architecture Awards. The aim of the Architecture Awards is to highlight and promote contemporary architectural works whose construction, typology, and form, as well as their integration into the environment, constitute a creative proposal with innovative elements within the context of the existing built environment. The Awards concern completed works in Greece. They are three in number, granted every four years, and cover three distinct categories without any hierarchical ranking. The first category concerns residential projects, the second comprises works commissioned by public authorities or organizations of the broader public sector, and the third includes all other projects that do not fall into the first two categories.
The exhibition includes all submissions, in order to document the tendencies in Greek architecture over the past five years. The Hellenic Institute of Architecture believes that the fundamental purpose of an award is the recognition of the quality of an achievement, meaning a reward not only for the result itself, but also for the effort of all those who contributed to its realization. It is important to note that, unlike what usually happens, the second selection committee of the Architecture Awards visits the nominated projects. It should also be noted that the entire selection process offers a unique opportunity for further dialogue on the course of Greek architecture at the dawn of the new millennium, a dialogue that extends beyond the country’s borders, thereby contributing to the integration of Greece’s architectural discourse into the international architectural scene.
The projects are presented through photographs and drawings, as well as with models, while the exhibition catalog features all submissions.
The 2008 Architecture Awards ceremony took place on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at 19:00 , at the Benaki Museum on Pireos Street. The exhibition of the submissions continued until June 7, 2009.
The exhibition of submissions was presented at the Teloglion Foundation of Arts, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, from June 23, 2009, to July 7, 2009.
