FUTURE UNDER CONSTRUCTION | DOXIADIS IN SKOPJE
17.12.2018-17.02.2019
Fifty-five years after the 1963 earthquake that demolished 80% of the city of Skopje, the contribution of Konstantinos A. Doxiadis to the city’s redesign remains largely unknown. Similarly, the history of the buildings that ultimately shaped the new urban landscape of Skopje—after the design of the city center was commissioned to the office of the Japanese architect Kenzo Tange—remains on the sidelines. Today, outstanding examples of the Metabolism and Brutalism movements suffer from decades of abandonment and neglect. The exhibition Future Under Construction | Doxiadis in Skopje, which opened on Monday, December 17th at 20:00 at the Benaki Museum / Piraeus 138, presented for the first time the impressive work of Doxiadis in Skopje. It included detailed documentation of the earthquake damage, design strategies, and a new urban plan for the city. At the same time, it introduced the Greek public to Kenzo Tange’s work for Skopje’s city center, as well as a series of buildings by prominent Yugoslav architects that still stand today in the heart of the city.
